Connecting To Canada

Surprise Cake

When I signed the Canadian passport, I felt new doors opening for me. Now, I can freely go to the places I have always wanted to visit. I hurried home to show my family my new passport. When I opened the door, my granddaughter surprised me with this lovely cake. At that moment I wished my husband was there with me. Our shared dream was to explore the world together, but due to COVID-19, I lost him. But I try to always look at the bright side of things, telling myself that I am still breathing and I recieved citizenship, so be happy, be content.

Canada 150

My journey to Canada started when I moved to Edmonton with my husband in 1975. Although I loved my home country Pakistan, I’ve always felt connected to Canada and looked for ways to show my pride and appreciation. This picture was taken when I went with my family to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. My kids are all married, well-educated and doing very well. However, I know if I lived in Pakistan, I don't think my kids would have the same opportunities to be as successful as they are now. In addition to my Canadian identity I am also connected to my hometown Pakistan and continue to celebrate cultural holidays with family and friends. It's not like I'm going to entirely change, but I continually express my gratitude to Canada. I never say: ‘No, it’s not my country.’ This is my country, and I am proud to be a Muslim Canadian woman.

Canadian Citizenship

I came to Canada in 1977 when I was only 19 years old. Even though I felt a strong connection to Canada, I never considered applying to be a citizen. After 10 years, I made the decision to apply for citizenship because both my husband and all of my children were citizens of Canada. I received my citizenship on July 1st, and whilst celebrating the moment, a journalist from the Edmonton Journal snapped this picture. The next morning, I found the picture on the Edmonton Journal newspaper. In Canada, I really felt appreciated and connected. I can express myself freely. I have independence here. I have lived here for about 42 years, and my love for Canada is continuing to grow, I am proud to be Canadian.
