Connecting to our Past
In my home country, Lebanon, we used oil lamps before there was electricity. These oil lamps would hook on walls or hang high. We would take the oil lamp and sit around a circle with my grandparents as they told stories. The oil lamp was used by all people for various purposes such as reading and writing and now those same people who used the oil lamps all have different professions now such as teachers, doctors and lawyers. This represents the hard work put in to obtain knowledge despite difficult circumstances. We have to make the most of every opportunity because, in the end, that is how we create our life stories.
These bangles were a gift from my late mother to my son. My mother played a vital role in my life and my children's lives. My children used to call her Nana, meaning grandmother. My mother was the woman who inspired and shaped me to be the educated woman I am today. My late mother left these bangles for my son's bride when he got married. Now with my daughter, the bangles she once wore when she was young, I passed to my granddaughter to wear when she's a little older.
This picture is from my hometown, my village in Lebanon. This image is very dear to me as this is where many of my memories were created, my childhood took place in this village. This image reminds me of my mother, the mother is the country and home, the mother is the life and the heartbeat. No one truly understands this feeling except those who leave their mothers behind.
