The Women-CONNECT Study (2020-2022)

This digital exhibit explores the meaning of ‘social connectedness’ for 41 Muslim immigrant older women living in Edmonton, Alberta. Social connectedness refers to the meaningful and positive connections we have with others. During the study, women shared images and narratives of being connected or disconnected in their communities. The exhibit presents exemplars of these shared images with their accompanying narratives. The narratives are composites of women’s own words and their experiences as understood by the research team. The exhibit’s key themes aim to expand our understanding of what it means to feel connected in older age.

Thank you to the women who participated in this study for their willingness to share their stories and for their trust in us to carry these stories forward. While some women have consented to have their identities known in this exhibit, others preferred to remain anonymous.

Thank you to our Research Team members- Huda Temuri, Khadija Abdi and Esra Ben Mabrouk- whose collective commitment to just representation of Muslim communities, cross-cultural understandings, and creative writing efforts resulted in this final exhibit.
